Server migration

(by chemicalbilology) Oct 02 2014

Hi everyone,

As you could see from the announcement above our front page feed for the last few months, we have been working on a migration of the Scientopia site to a new hosting company and server. Our previous hosting was costing us more than we have been taking in via Adsense, so we needed to find a more sustainable solution. The new server costs less, and is affordable on our Adsense income budget.

Underneath the hood this has been a fairly substantial change (which is why it took so long): the old site was built in the earlier days of WordPress MultiUser on an older version of Ubuntu, and it wasn't as straightforward as it should have been to do a copy/upload-style cloning of the original server. We had to start from scratch. Once a new server was set up, some things about the file structures in the original server's WordPress installation were incompatible with a freshly installed WordPress Network installation. Once these problems were solved, we were able to move all the content piece by piece and perform search-and-replace on the database to update the links to images and files. We chose to change our domain name structure, but we employed rewrite rules to redirect the old urls to the new urls. There might be a few hiccups in individual blogs here and there, comments that were accidentally missed during the content migrations, sidebars and title images that bloggers will need to update, but overall this should have little effect on the user experience of the site. Please do send us an email at scientopiablogsllc at gmail dot com or leave a comment if you notice something amiss.

With this move, we should be able to support ourselves sustainably with the revenue we generate through the combination of our bloggers' content and your readership. So thank you, please keep reading, and we will keep blogging!

Our New Home

As you no doubt noticed, we had a lot of trouble last week, due to hosting glitches. I'll tell you the whole story when I have time to write it down. But the short version is, "ANhosting" is a slimy bait&switch operation that royally screwed us over.

We're now happily migrated to a much more dependable host. You should notice an improvement in performance here at our new digs. And I've taken the opportunity to do some nice backend cleanups as long as I was moving us.

If you were subscribing to the sitewide feed, you'll need to update your subscription. The sitewide feed plugin that we were using at the old host was awful - so when I was rebuilding the system, I dumped it in favor of something that's much cleaner, and shouldn't cause any of the glitches that we experienced before.

There'll definitely be growing pains. Not everything has been completely updated here. So give us a few days. But we're here, and we're live, and you can comment again without worrying about the site getting randomly disabled by idiots.
